Black History Month

February is Black History Month, in honor of the essential contributions, sacrifices and accomplishments that Black people have made — and continue to make — to the American story. While schools honor the culture and experiences of our diverse student and staff population throughout the school year, being purposeful and intentional in our celebration of Black History month reinforces our commitment as a school division to inspire and empower students.

Each year on February 17th, National Random Acts of Kindness Day is celebrated by individuals, groups, and organizations nationwide to encourage acts of kindness.  Performing a random act of kindness is exactly what it sounds like: deliberately attempting to brighten someone else’s day by doing something kind for no specific reason. The intention behind it is to practice selflessness, but research has shown that there are, in fact, many benefits to practicing kindness. Not only do the acts of kindness bring joy to the receiver, but they spread positive reactions to the giver, too!   For children, showing kindness towards family, friends, their community, and strangers strengthen skills such as respect, responsibility, empathy, and compassion. Help your child to learn the positive traits of compassion and kindness.  There are so many ways for children to join in and participate in this month’s activities of acts of kindness.  Once your child completes a RAK, they can mark it off.  Once the month is over, talk with your child about all the RAKs that they accomplished and how it makes them feel.  Send in pictures showing how Mehfoud Pandas show Random Acts of Kindness.
